The Campuhan Ridge Walk: a quiet morning near Ubud

Illustration: a general Bali scene, not a photograph

An easy ridge path between two river valleys, and how to fit it into your stay.

Of all the walks around Ubud, the Campuhan Ridge Walk is the easiest to love. A narrow paved path runs along the spine of a grassy ridge, with jungle valleys falling away on either side and tall alang-alang grass moving in the breeze.

Where it starts

The walk begins on the western edge of Ubud Centre, near Pura Gunung Lebah, a temple set where two rivers meet. Campuhan means the place where two rivers meet, which gives the area its name. From the temple, the path climbs gently onto the ridge and heads north.

What to expect

  • Distance: the paved ridge section is around two kilometres each way.
  • Difficulty: easy, with a short climb at the start and very little shade.
  • Best time: sunrise or early morning, before the heat and the crowds.
  • What to bring: water, a hat and comfortable shoes.

From Sayan

Campuhan sits on the Sayan side of Ubud Centre. Ask our team the evening before and we will arrange an early driver, so you are on the ridge while the valley is still cool.
