Two traditions, two very different treatments. What happens in each, and which one suits you.
In Bali, "massage" usually means Balinese massage: warm oil, long flowing strokes and a nap you did not plan. At Ploenjai Thai Spa the tradition is Thai, and the experience is very different. Here is how the two compare.
Thai massage
Traditional Thai massage comes from Thailand, where it is called nuad thai. It is usually done without oil, with you in loose, comfortable clothing. The therapist applies rhythmic pressure with the palms, thumbs, elbows and knees along lines of the body, and moves you through assisted stretches that open the hips, back and shoulders.
It is an active massage. Expect firm pressure, deliberate stretching and a feeling of being loosened rather than lulled. Many people describe it as having yoga done for you.
Balinese massage
Balinese massage is oil-based and flowing. It combines long strokes, kneading, skin rolling and acupressure, usually on a massage table, to relax the muscles and calm the mind.
Which to choose
- Choose Thai if you feel stiff after a long flight or days of walking, like firm pressure, or enjoy stretching.
- Choose an oil massage if your priority is deep relaxation with gentle, flowing pressure.
- Tell your therapist about injuries, pregnancy or areas to avoid before you begin. Thai technique can always be adjusted.
